04  ·  The House

Seven hands, in order.

Between the ground and this page, P-01 was held by seven people. Each of them signed for it, and each signature is on the paper. Scroll to draw the wire through their hands. Pluck it anywhere.

  1. 01 · Recovered

    A kimberlite pipe, northern Botswana

Found by the mine's X-ray sorter, weighed at 3.41 carats, sealed into a numbered bag before a hand touched it.

    Signed · recovery shift supervisor · 14 January 2025

“It came out of the ground looking like a sugar cube somebody had licked.”

  2. 02 · Sorted

    The sorting house, Gaborone

Sorted with about twelve hundred other stones by size, colour and shape, and assigned to a run-of-mine parcel for sale.

    Signed · senior sorter · 3 February 2025

“Twelve hundred stones and they all want to be looked at first.”

  3. 03 · Bought

    A rough tender, Antwerp

Bought at sealed tender. Before anything else, the bag's seal was checked against the export certificate that travelled with it.

    Signed · Veredmor rough buyer · 11 March 2025

“The seal matched. That is the most boring sentence in the business and the most important one.”

  4. 04 · Planned

    The planning room

Scanned, and the finished stone drawn inside it three times. Two plans kept more weight. The brilliant kept more light, and won.

    Signed · planner · 2 April 2025

“The heavy plans were better for us. The brilliant was better for whoever wears it.”

  5. 05 · Cut

    The bench

Cleaved, bruted and polished over nine working days. Forty-one hours on the wheel, fifty-seven facets.

    Signed · Yael Oren, cutter · 19 April 2025

“It fought me on the pavilion. Everything good does.”

  6. 06 · Graded

    An independent laboratory

Graded G colour, VS1 clarity, excellent cut, and the report number laser-inscribed on the girdle, too small to see without a loupe.

    Signed · grader · 6 May 2025

“We grade what is there. The rest is marketing.”

  7. 07 · Kept

    The house

Folded into parcel paper 07 with six others, and entered in the ledger. You are reading the paper now.

Signed · keeper of the ledger · 20 May 2025

“Seven signatures. We will add yours.”

What the house will not do

Three lines in the front of the ledger.

  1. i

Sell a stone whose chain has a gap in it, however short.

    Even a weekend.
  2. ii

Write a grade the laboratory did not write.

    Not even a better one.
  3. iii

Use a word on the paper that cannot be checked.

Which is why it never says timeless.
